Como explicaram com honestidade, ainda que com pouca constância, Simão tinha feito muitos milagres, 'e por esses motivos seguimo-lo'. S. Pedro devia agora fazer alguns, então, segui-lo-iam a ele, em vez de seguirem Simão. S. Pedro voltou-se e viu 'uma sardinha dependurada de uma janela'. Tirou-a do gancho em que se encontrava e foi até ao grupo de pessoas reunidas. 'Se agora virdes isto a nadar na água como um peixe, sereis capazes de acreditar naquele que anuncio?' A multidão respondeu a uma só voz: 'Acreditaremos verdadeiramente em ti'. S. "Tal como uma visão celestial tinha informado S. Pedro, Simão tinha-se agora estabelecido na capital do império, onde (assim relatam os Actos de Pedro, escritos no século II), uma vez mais, estava a seduzir pessoas graças ao engenho de Satanás. S. Pedro (...) partiu de imediato. O cenário com que Pedro foi recebido em Roma era terrível. Muitos dos cristãos da cidade já tinham abandonado os caminhos de Cristo e tinham-se tornado seguidores fervorosos de Simão - incluindo alguns dos mais ricos doadores cristãos. (...) Os cristãos que se mantinham fiéis incitaram imediatamente S. Pedro a 'dar combate a Simão e não lhe permitir que continuasse a envergonhar o povo'. S. Pedro concordou. (...) A primeira movimentação de Pedro contra o feiticeiro maligno foi inesperada mas eficaz: ordenou a um grande cão que fosse ter com Simão, levantasse as patas dianteiras e o insultasse. O cão fez tudo isso de forma obediente, rosnando frases contundentes como 'seu inexcedivelmente malvado e desavergonhado', e 'mais malévolo de todos e enganador das almas simples', equilibrando-se nas patas traseiras.
