(sequência daqui) Agarradas a essas palavras vieram as da escritora Joan Didion – também favorita de Lloyd Cole a quem insuflou a inspiração para “Rattlesnakes” – em “Atomized” (onde John Donne e Didion se cruzam: “Is each of us an island or more like Finland, here’s what I say to them: ‘Things fall apart’”) e “Lone Didion” (“Every Saturday night, she came in with him, table six in the back, tall beer and a gin, now she comes in alone, lone Didion”). E, por outra via, inesperadamente, as inflexões do Lou Reed era-Velvets indelevelmente carimbadas na matéria de “The Night Before Your Birthday”, “Stop n’ Shop” e “Never Fall Apart”. Escoltado por Alan Hampton (baixo), Mike Viola (guitarra) e Abe Rounds (bateria), e brandindo o extraordinário violino amestrado (escutem-no em "Eight"), prestemos a devida atenção a este singularíssimo exemplo de “an irrepressible optimist working with a fatal flaw”.
