" Monty Python’s Life of Brian opened on August 17, 1979 in New York and Los Angeles. And all hell broke loose.

Some Jewish groups took offence and told their followers not to see the film. Other religions jumped on the bandwagon. An edition of the trade paper Variety at the time carried the headlines, “Catholic Org Rap Orion For Brian”, “Rabbinical Alliance Pours On Condemnation of Life of Brian” and “Lutheran Broadcast Slam at Life of Brian – Crude, Rude”.

All kinds of charges were levelled at the film – it was blasphemous, it showed men dressed up as women, it was offensive to homosexuals, it wasn’t funny, it used too much bad language. The Pythons were also accused of targeting Christians. They wouldn’t have made a film like this about Muslims, their detractors said. (Sound familiar?)

The outcry spread. The Roman Catholic Church denounced the film and gave it their own rating – “C” for “Condemned”. Brian was banned in several countries, including Norway. This famously led to the film being marketed in Sweden as, “The film so funny it’s been banned in Norway.” When the UK premiere was held at the Plaza, Regent Street, on November 8, 1979, protestors stood outside and sang hymns. And, when the film finally went on general release, some cinema-goers found they had to cross intimidating picket lines to see it".
